Guwahati: In the ongoing counting of ballots, the ruling BJP and its coalition partners have registered a landslide victory in Assam’s panchayat election by winning and taking lead in over 83 percent of 397 Zilla Parishad seats and 91 percent of 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats.
The ruling coalition has achieved notable success across multiple districts including Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Nagaon, and Morigaon.
While the BJP and its allies have emerged victorious in 304 out of the total 397 Zila Parishad seats, the Congress won in just 63 seats while other parties and Independents have won 30 seats.
On the other hand, out of the total 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats, BJP and its allies have won 1,196 seats while the Congress won just 110 seats while others have won 30 seats. It is significant that ruling BJP registered a lead by winning a large number of seats without any contest too.
The Congress has also suffered major setbacks in Upper Assam districts, including Jorhat and Sivasagar districts which fall under the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency from where Gaurav Gogoi had won the general elections last year.
In both Jorhat and Sivasagar district, the Congress party failed to win even a single Zila Parishad or Anchalik Panchayat seat.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in an interaction with party workers said, “We are going to register a massive victory in this election.”
Lauding the state BJP leaders, Mr Sarma said, “State BJP president Dilip Saikia has led us from the front in this election. From the beginning, we were confident that we would be able to get a massive victory after successfully completing the selection of candidates to the alliance. All ministers, MLAs, Union ministers, all BJP leaders took part in this election following the suggestion of the state BJP president.”
"I extend my gratitude, thanks and congratulate all - especially union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP's national secretary MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, former union minister Rameswar Teli, union MoS Pabitra Margherita. The Prime Minister's love for Assam and his greetings is an inspiration for us. The popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his love for Assam is also a factor for BJP's massive victory," he said.
Meanwhile, four persons were detained in Silchar following a clash at a counting centre between supporters of two independent candidates after one of them took the lead, leaving a constable injured.
The poll had seen a turnout of 74.71 percent out of a voter count of 1,80,36,682 across 27 districts. The counting of ballots on some of the seats was still going on.
