Raipur: Come April 22, Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar is set to bury into oblivion its bloody past of killings and improvised explosive device (IED) explosions, caused by the Leftwing insurgency, and embrace sports culture with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar scheduled to spell magic on the tribal children in the area with his aura and batting skills.
The remote villages of Dantewada district, once a theatre of Leftwing Extremism, are now surcharged with excitement with tribal children waiting with bated breath to have a glimpse of the ‘God of Cricket’.
“The excitement among the tribal children in the villages in Dantewada district, scheduled to be visited by Tendulkar, beggars belief. Cricket fever gripped the villages making the sign of fear for Naxals among the tribals a thing of past”, a sports welfare officer said on Tuesday.
Tendulkar who is visiting Dantewada district for the first time is scheduled to inaugurate the cricket stadium in Paneda, developed by the ‘Sachin Tendulkar Foundation’, under Gidam block and play cricket with the tribal students.
He is scheduled to visit the district along with his family.
Tendulkar is also going to share some of his great moments of his life with a gathering of teachers and students in the Gidam Auditorium to inspire them to excel in their fields.
He will visit the remote tribal village of Chindnar, situated on the bank of Indravati to interact with the villagers and children.
His foundation has funded development of multi-use playgrounds in 50 villages.
These playgrounds will offer facilities for cricket, football, kabaddi, kho-kho, athletics, - and serve as real-life classrooms for leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, the officer said.
As Bastar gears up to shed its ignominious past of Naxal violence and enter a new era of peace and development, Sachin Tendulkar is still at the crease- playing for India.
