Bengal CM Promises Aid, Warns Against Violence in Riot-Hit Areas

The CM announced Rs 718 crore for Murshidabad’s development and a new subdivision for Samsergunj, Suti, and Farakka, with a government notification and headquarters to be established soon.

Berhampore, May 6: "No more Waqf protest movements allowed in West Bengal. Protest in New Delhi," said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at a meeting in Suti Chabghati KD High School on Tuesday.

Addressing a public meeting, she expressed dismay over violence in Dhuliyan, Samsergunj, Suti, and Jangipur from April 8-13, where three people died, 17 were injured, and nearly 1,000 houses and shops were destroyed.
"If anyone disturbs Murshidabad’s peace in the name of Waqf, I will be your worst enemy," she warned, emphasizing her stance against riots.
"If you engage in riots, I will withdraw all support and disown you. I want light, not darkness." She urged other state governments to avoid division, stating, "A divided country is weak."
At Samsergunj BDO office, Banerjee met with affected families, announcing that Jhuma Ali Seikh, widow of Udhampur encounter victim Jhantu Ali Seikh, will receive a homeguard job and Rs 10 lakh compensation. The state will cover education costs for their children, Tanvir and Rehana. Ejaj Ahmad Seikh’s wife was also promised a job and Rs 10 lakh. Banerjee distributed Rs 1.2 lakh per family to 280 people under the "Amar Bari" project for house repairs and promised soft loans for shop owners. She noted 400 houses received building materials.
However, Harogobinda Das and son Chandan Das’s family, whose members were murdered, rejected the compensation and filed a High Court case for a CBI inquiry. Banerjee did not visit riot-hit areas in Dhuliyan, Samsergunj, or Zafrarabad. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed she avoided these areas due to planned black flag protests, though Banerjee cited bad weather and heard grievances at the BDO office.
She announced Rs 718 crore for Murshidabad’s development and a new subdivision for Samsergunj, Suti, and Farakka, with a government notification and headquarters to be established soon.
