Kolkata: A West Bengal BJP MLA was admitted to a hospital after he suffered head injuries following an assault allegedly by his party workers at Debra in West Midnapore on Monday evening when he protested a feud over extortion by them.
The injured legislator, Subhasis Om, represents Debra seat in the district. He has been admitted to Debra Super Speciality Hospital. Some of his aides were also hurt in the attack and have been admitted with him there also.
This is the first time an elected representative of the BJP was beaten up by his own partymen over extortion within six months of coming to power in the state with a promise to end the menace.
Mr Om alleged, “Trouble broke out in the area over extortion. Some of our party workers wanted to lodge a case against others. I went to the spot and told them not to take any such step as we belong to the same family. Suddenly an attack happened on me. It took place because of my protest against extortion.”
Later Ghatal BJP organisational district president Tanmoy Pal visited Mr Om at the hospital. He however took a potshot at his party MLA for the bandage on his head and suggested that the issue could have been resolved internally over a meeting in the party instead of speaking out in the public.
