New Delhi: Australian authorities are investigating an online death threat against Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit to Australia from July 8 to 10.
According to media reports, the Australian Federal Police have traced an IP address linked to the social media post and are examining the threat.
The comment was reportedly posted under a Facebook post promoting the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community event scheduled at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on July 9, where the Prime Minister is expected to interact with the Indian diaspora. The message, posted from an account identified as Abu Mustafa, contained a threat against the Prime Minister.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was honoured to welcome Modi for the third annual bilateral summit, referring to him as his “friend”. He said ties between the two countries “have never been more consequential” and described the partnership as contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. He also described India as a critical economic partner.

Officials said threats against visiting heads of government are treated with seriousness, with security arrangements involving multiple agencies, including the Australian Federal Police and state authorities. The visit comes amid concerns over extremist activities targeting the Indian community in Australia in recent years.
Earlier, ministry of external affairs secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon reiterated India’s position against terrorism and violent extremism. “Well, in all our international engagements, whether it is multilateral or whether it is bilaterally, I think it's on record that we take very, very strong positions against terrorism and violent extremism. There's no doubt about that. We do feel that the international community has to be continuously reminded that terrorism and violent extremism remain a serious threat to international peace and security. We also have to repeatedly repeat ourselves that terrorism is really, nothing short of a crime against humanity,” he said.
He added, “These are discussions we have everywhere, including with our very close partners. so, you can take it for granted that this happens wherever we go. I am quite confident that the countries the Prime Minister is visiting, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, have equally strong views on the issue of terrorism and violent extremism.”
