AP CS Asks Power Utilities To Be Ready For Storm, Gusts

In view of the red alert issued for coastal districts, the Vijayanand advised field teams in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram to remain extra vigilant and responsive

VIJAYAWADA: AP chief secretary (CS) K. Vijayanand has directed power utilities in Andhra Pradesh to remain on high alert in view of the expected pre-monsoon thunderstorms and gusty winds.

He instructed CMDs of DISCOMs to monitor the situation on a daily basis, ensuring close coordination from assistant engineers to superintending engineers at the field level. This would help restore power immediately in case of any disruptions.

In view of the red alert issued for coastal districts, the Vijayanand advised field teams in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram to remain extra vigilant and responsive. He warned that any negligence in duty will be viewed seriously.

The CS instructed all DISCOMs to set up 24x7 control rooms for round-the-clock monitoring, emergency response, and prompt grievance redressal. He asked the distribution companies to give advance intimation to consumers and public representatives about planned outages or maintenance works.

Vijayanand said, “AP recorded a peak electricity demand of 12,600 MW on 13th May 2025, with average daily consumption reaching around 228 MU. Power demand in the coming months (June to November 2025) is projected to remain high, ranging between 218 and 235 MU per day. DISCOMs should strategically manage the situation through power swapping during peak hours and procurement via power exchanges to avoid shortages.”

Additionally, the chief secretary emphasised that DISCOM officers must be visibly present at work sites, especially during line maintenance and tree branch trimming, to ensure proper execution. To enhance accountability, he directed that each director of DISCOMs be assigned two to three districts for focused monitoring and timely reporting.

“All efforts must be made toward maintaining system reliability and ensuring better services to consumers during the upcoming monsoon season,” he added.
