AIIMS Bhubaneswar Achieves Milestone With First Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery
Professor Biswas underscored the broader impact of this development, stating that the introduction of robotic surgery services at AIIMS Bhubaneswar ensures access to cutting-edge healthcare for people across all sections of society.

Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable medical breakthrough, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, has successfully performed its first-ever robotic knee replacement surgery. The procedure was conducted on a 66-year-old female patient at the institute’s state-of-the-art facility, marking a significant milestone in the region's healthcare landscape.
According to an official statement released by the institute on Friday, this is the first robotic knee replacement procedure carried out within the government healthcare sector in both Odisha and Eastern India — setting a new benchmark for advanced, technology-driven medical care in the region.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director, Professor Ashutosh Biswas, commended the orthopaedics team for their achievement, noting that the procedure was completed seamlessly and the patient is currently in stable condition.
“This is a landmark moment for our institution and for public healthcare services in Eastern India,” he remarked.
Professor Biswas underscored the broader impact of this development, stating that the introduction of robotic surgery services at AIIMS Bhubaneswar ensures access to cutting-edge healthcare for people across all sections of society.
“With robotic-assisted surgeries now available, we are committed to offering high-precision, minimally invasive procedures to a larger population, reducing complications and enhancing patient recovery,” he added.
Providing further insights into the benefits of this advanced technology, Prof. Bishnu Prasad Patro, head of the department of orthopaedics, explained that robotic systems help minimise human error, offer real-time feedback during procedures, and allow surgeons to execute complex surgical steps with greater accuracy. “This technology significantly improves surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction,” he said.
According to experts, the successful surgery positions AIIMS Bhubaneswar at the forefront of robotic-assisted orthopaedic procedures in the government sector and reinforces its reputation as a leader in providing world-class healthcare services.
