After Abhishek, Kalyan Faces Mob Fury, Gets Hurt In WB

They shouted ‘Chor, Chor' slogan and showed black flags at them. A jostle broke out between two sides instantly: Reports

KOLKATA: A day after the violent mob attack on Diamond Harbour Trinamul Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal, his party fellow and four-time Serampore parliamentarian Kalyan Banerjee also received the same fate in another district and suffered head injuries.

The incident took place when the lawyer-turned-politician, accompanied by his party workers, was going to submit a deputation at Chanditala police station in Hooghly on Sunday in protest of the attack on their party scion at Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas on Saturday. Suddenly, angry local residents surrounded them on the road.

They shouted ‘Chor, Chor' slogan and showed black flags at them. A jostle broke out between two sides instantly. Like Abhishek, Mr Banerjee too claimed that he was hit on the head after BJP workers hurled bricks on him. Covering head with a piece of cloth, he then sat down on the road with his followers for a demonstration.

“The TMC MPs are deliberately targeted in a vendetta. Police are unaware of their privilege. The police officers, including the inspector-in-charge and sub division police officers, did not want to meet us and fled on BJP’s order,” Mr Banerjee alleged. TMC supremo and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to visit him at his residence.

She posted on X-handle, “Yesterday, BJP supporters brutally attacked and lynched @AITCofficial Lok Sabha Floor Leader @abhishekaitc. The terrifying videos are in the public domain. Today, our Chief Whip in Lok Sabha, @KBanerjee_AITC was also a victim of a planned BJP attack. BJP murdering democracy.”

Meanwhile, police arrested five persons– Akash Gayen, Kajal Das, Debasis Dutta, Tapan Maity and Nirmalya Sengupta– late on Saturday night after identifying them from multiple videos of the attack on the TMC national general secretary at Sonarpur. Akash, according to TMC, is a BJP supporter.

On the other hand, BJP claimed that three among the five accused, held in the case, were TMC workers and followers of former party MLA of Sonarpur South: Lovely Maitra. Ms Maitra however rejected the claims.

Meanwhile, TMC was stumped on Sunday when 60 party MLAs among the 80 remained absent at a meeting called by their supremo at her residence on Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalighat in the afternoon. Beleghata MLA and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, who went to attend the meeting, later informed that the meeting was called off.

In the evening Ms Banerjee, along with party MLA Madan Mitra, visited her MP nephew at his house. Interestingly, Abhishek has been summoned by the criminal investigation department of the state police to appear at its headquarters, Bhawani Bhavan, on Monday for questioning in the alleged forged signatures of TMC MLA to endorse the name of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition.
