AAP Drops Chadha as Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader

According to sources, the party has also conveyed that Chadha should not be allotted speaking time from its quota in the Upper House.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party has written to the Rajya Sabha secretariat seeking removal of its MP Raghav Chadha as deputy leader in the House and proposed Punjab MP Ashok Mittal as his replacement, sources said on Thursday.

According to sources, the party has also conveyed that Chadha should not be allotted speaking time from its quota in the Upper House.

The move comes amid Chadha’s limited public engagement with party activities and his absence from several events led by party chief Arvind Kejriwal. Chadha, once seen as a key figure in the party and active in Punjab and Delhi affairs, was abroad for medical reasons when Kejriwal was arrested in March 2024 in connection with the excise policy case. He returned and met Kejriwal after his release in September that year.
He also remained silent following the recent discharge of Kejriwal, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and others in the case, and did not attend subsequent party events, including a press conference and a rally at Jantar Mantar. Party sources said Chadha has been less involved in organisational matters, though he has continued to raise issues in and outside Parliament.
Mittal said he had been entrusted with the responsibility by the party leadership. “Now, I have been given this role. Our party wants all MPs to learn, and probably in that context, I have been given this role so that I can learn the processes and administrative skills in politics,” he said, describing the change as routine.
The party currently has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha, including seven from Punjab and three from Delhi.
