A Year After Pahalgam Terrorist Attack, Odisha Widow Awaits Promised Government Job
Despite submitting all necessary documents months ago, she says there has been little progress.

Bhubaneswar: A year after the tragic terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam claimed the life of Prashant Satpathy from Odisha’s Balasore district, his family continues to grapple not just with grief, but with uncertainty over unfulfilled assurances.
The anniversary of the attack has reopened emotional wounds for his widow, Priyadarshini Satpathy, who is still waiting for a government job promised to her in the aftermath of the incident. Despite submitting all necessary documents months ago, she says there has been little progress.
Recalling the day that changed her life forever, Priyadarshini said the memories of their Kashmir trip—once filled with joy—now haunt her. “I will never be able to forget that incident for the rest of my life. Life has become very difficult to manage,” she said, speaking to a local television channel.
Left to raise their young son alone, she described the financial and emotional strain of the past year. “In the current inflationary situation, managing everything has become extremely tough. My son constantly misses his father in the smallest of moments. I am unable to give him enough time or fulfill all his needs,” she said.
She added that the tragedy has had a profound impact on her child. “After the incident, my son has matured a lot. His childlike innocence has completely vanished. He has grown beyond his age, and it is painful to see such a change.”
Following the attack, the Odisha government had announced a compensation package that included financial assistance, support for the child’s education, and a government job for the next of kin. While Priyadarshini confirmed that financial aid has been disbursed, the employment promise remains pending.
“I request the government to kindly provide me with a job as per my qualifications, so that it becomes easier for me to sustain my family,” she said.
The case brings to the fore a broader concern over delays in rehabilitation measures for victims of terror attacks, even as governments announce immediate relief in the wake of such tragedies.
There was no official response from the Odisha government at the time of filing this report.
