KOLKATA: A day before the first phase of the Assembly Election in West Bengal, the Election Commission (EC) was able to restore only 136 names in the state voters' list after they were cleared by the 19 appellate tribunals, set up by the Supreme Court, from a tally of 138 applications.

The website of the Chief Electoral Office West Bengal uploaded the 138 names, which include both additions and deletions, constituency-wise under title of ‘Appellate Tribunal Supplementary List No 1’ after receiving them from the forums post Tuesday midnight.

While the distribution of these names has not been made public, it has emerged that the 136 ‘additions’ include 63 who are from Murshidabad, a district which is going to polls along with 15 others on Thursday. According to sources, the 138 cases were among 27.16 lakh names which were earlier marked ‘ineligible' in the tally of a total deletions of around 90.83 lakhs in the special intensive revision of the EC.

The figure anyway reflects the slow progress in the judicial forums’ work at Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation in Joka of south western parts of Kolkata. The state never witnessed such a situation earlier.

On Thursday, around 3.60 crore voters are expected to exercise their franchise at 152 assembly seats, from North to South, under the watch of 2407 companies of central forces. They include nearly 50.26 lakhs in Murshidabad where 220 candidates including some heavyweights are contesting at 22 seats.

The district has 6,159 polling centres. Murshidabad district election officer R Arjuna said, "The EC has identified 1,866 critical polling centres, 2,328 super sensitive polling centres and 990 super vulnerable areas. 316 companies of central forces with special intensive quick response teams have deployed."

Meanwhile, a bag full of crude bombs was found at Mehedi Bagan in Domkol while several liquor bottles and cash were seized by the police while checking the car of a close aide of Raninagar Trinamul Congress candidate Abdul Soumik Hussain. Three persons were arrested also.
