7 Killed, 19 Injured In Truck-Tempo Collision On Samruddhi Expressway

MUMBAI: At least seven people were killed and 19 others sustained critical injuries after a speeding truck hit a tempo pickup vehicle in the wee hours of Friday near Dhamangaon on the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra.
The accident took place at around 12.45 am near Dhamangaon railway station. The tempo pickup was carrying devotees who were travelling from Shegaon, a renowned pilgrimage centre located in the Buldhana district, to Wardha. They were returning home with the idol Goddess Durga ahead of the Navratri festival when the collision occurred.
The impact of the crash was so severe that five people died on the spot, while two others died on the way to the hospital. The deceased were identified as Ghanshyam Patil, Praveen Bakane, Golu Badalgwar, Om Gawde, Dataji Khursage, Roshan Raut and one unidentified individual.
According to police, among the injured people, four to five people are in critical condition, while the rest are out of danger. However, all of them are presently under treatment.
“Police teams reached the scene immediately to initiate rescue operations and begin investigating the collision,” Amravati district superintendent of police (SP) Niketan Kadam said.
The exact cause of the crash is yet to be established and a detailed inquiry is underway, he added.
Accidents have occurred on the Samruddhi Highway near Dhamangaon Railway in the past as well. In June 2026, five members of a family from Chandrapur lost their lives in the same area when their car collided with a stationary container truck.
Friday’s horrific accident has again brought to fore the rising number of mishaps on the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg. As many as 572 people have lost their lives in 633 accidents on the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg over the past three and a half years.
A total of 491 accidents occurred on the Samruddhi Mahamarg between December 2022 and January 31, 2026, resulting in 444 fatalities. During the eight-month period from January to August 2026, 128 people lost their lives in 142 accidents on the Expressway.
