Berhampore: Three migrant workers from Murshidabad in West Bengal were detained and sent to a camp by the police in Assam on the suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. They are Nazrul Islam and Sanaur Mullick of Shaktipur and Zahir Sheikh from Beldanga.
They went to Nagaon on August 22 and started hawking. They were however detained by the Assam Police at Haibargaon as they were talking in Bengali which triggered a suspicion among the cops about them being Bangladeshi nationals.
The trio was sent to a detention camp later though they have valid identity documents including Aadhaar Cards. According to their relatives, they came to know about their detention from other migrant workers in Assam and approached the Murshidabad police for help. The Mamata Banerjee government is also trying to secure their release.
Trinamul Congress Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam, who is the West Bengal Migrant Workers Welfare Board Chairman, said, "We have contacted the Assam government and told them that they are all Indian citizens and permanent residents of Murshidabad in West Bengal having valid proof of their nationality. Since they were speaking in Bengali, the Assam police mistook them as Bangladeshi nationals. We hope they will return home soon.”
