Bhubaneswar: Two engineering students were killed and five others sustained critical injuries after their SUV collided head-on with a truck near Chandaka on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar late on Thursday night, police said. Seven persons were travelling in the SUV when the accident occurred on the Chandaka-Bhola stretch.
The collision left the front portion of the SUV mangled, trapping occupants inside. Locals and commuters who rushed to the spot immediately alerted police and emergency services. Fire services and rescuers used gas cutters to extricate the trapped passengers from the severely damaged vehicle.
The operation continued for several hours due to the extent of damage caused to the SUV. Traffic movement on the route was temporarily disrupted as police and rescue teams cleared the wreckage and restored normal vehicular movement.
Police launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident, including whether overspeeding or negligent driving contributed to the crash.
