1,090 Police Personnel Get Service Medals on I-Day Eve
According to a Union home ministry statement, 233 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 have been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 have been decorated with the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).

New Delhi: On the eve of the 79th Independence Day, the Centre on Thursday announced service medals for 1,090 police personnel from various central and state forces.
According to a Union home ministry statement, 233 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 have been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 have been decorated with the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
The awards also include medals for fire service, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services personnel, the ministry said.
Among the gallantry medals, the highest number, 152, have been awarded to personnel involved in operations in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by 54 to troops deployed in anti-Naxal operations, three for duties in the northeast, and 24 from other regions. Four fire service personnel and one home guard and civil defence official have also been awarded the Gallantry Medal, the ministry said.
Among the Central Armed Police Forces, the CRPF has received 85 medals, including 23 Gallantry Medals, the highest among all central forces, as well as three Shaurya Chakras, five President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 57 Medals for Meritorious Service.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has bagged 69 police medals, including two Vir Chakras, 16 Gallantry Medals, five President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 46 Medals for Meritorious Service.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has received three PSMs and 10 MSMs, while the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has been awarded two PSMs and 11 MSMs. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has received three PSMs and 23 MSMs.
The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery, either in saving life and property or in preventing crime or arresting criminals, with the risk incurred being assessed in light of the obligations and duties of the officer concerned.
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is awarded for a specially distinguished record of service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) is given for valuable service characterised by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
