When spooky turned sexy
Halloween is that time of the year when people across the world do their best to get spooked — but for residents of namma ooru, it’s all about letting loose their inner cosplay champion! There might be quite some way to go still before trick-or-treating becomes a regular Halloween custom in town, but boy, does it offer a perfect excuse for night owls to dress up and party all night long. This year, the weekend brought on some early celebrations... and even models and actors from the industry got involved! While Shruti Haasan became a pink wig-flaunting witch, 2.0 star Amy Jackson rocked a seductive Poison Ivy supervillian look, along with her friends in England.
Says model and yogini Ruchi Raj, “This is my favourite festival of the year; more than Deepavali or New Year’s, I wait for it impatiently each time around. Harley Quinn is my go-to character because I feel the costume should reflect one’s personality, and she suits me to a tee. I also think her body personality matches mine, and that’s a bonus. The dress was easy to put together — a jacket, some sexy shorts, and some mad make-up! There were a lot of Halloween house parties happening, and we had a ball.”
Along with Harley (clearly Suicide Squad was a hit in the city), the Joker was another usual favourite that made its rounds this time around as well. Actress Yaashika Anand, who did a round of all the nightclubs across town, says that the decor added to the vibe everywhere — “I just slipped on a mask, and wore a glam outfit, so I could blend in easily at most of the pubs. It was great to see everyone celebrating the occasion, and putting in so much effort into their cosplays — I was even amused by someone who came in a full Spiderman outfit!”
Then there was those, who even had the time to do multiple looks. Model Ayisha Abdur Rahman quips, “I did two looks for this year’s Halloween. I opted for a Spider look and got my nails (with cobwebs and spiders) done at a salon in Chennai. To match that, I painted a spider on my face with the essentials I had. People in Chennai think that it takes too much effort to put up a particular look. I had uploaded an Instagram story on how to achieve the look with just kajal, foundation and loose powder. For the second look, I did blood make-up. Two years back, I took part in a Halloween party sporting a vampire look. I wanted to make it simple, so I used red lipstick for my eyes and lips.”
Celebrity make up artist Samantha Jagan agrees that youngsters have really taken the time out this year to perfect their looks. “The in-thing in Chennai is the skull-themed make up and other gory stuffs that go with it. Also, another popular makeup that I did for one my client is the Joker look. Every year, there is a gradual increase in people celebrating halloween. Also, its all about dress up and play, so it is another excuse to have fun. Many socialites are hosting private costume parties and clubs are also setting aside special dates for Halloween. People are also equally competitive and want to put their best foot forward.”
