Calicut Numismatics takes trip back in history
KOZHIKODE: In this era of digitisation, it becomes significant to collect currency notes and coins for the coming generation before ultimately embracing a cashless economy. A group of 30 members of the Calicut Numismatic Society is currently conducting a three-day Coin Fest here at Kozhikode corporation Jubilee Hall which will end on Sunday. Coins from ancient Indian kingdoms like Maurya, Kosala, Magadha and Gupta; Greek and Roman coins; gold and silver coins issued by various emperors and local kings who ruled India are on display. Society secretary Preman Puthiyappil said it was the Kozhikode fest’s seventh edition.
“The main attraction is the commemorative coins and currencies issued on some particular events or issues — 96 coins which issued by the Indian government,” he told DC. Currencies printed in various materials are also displayed; one major attraction being the cloth-made which was prevailing during the time of First World War in Germany. T.A. Vinayakumar had a collection of 230 flags and 200 currencies of various countries with their stamps and coins. Abdul Latheef, another exhibitor, had printing mistakes and the currencies having fancy numbers in his collection.
