Our Hope Society is first charity community initiated and managed by students.

KOCHI: Our Hope Society initiated by seven students of MES College, Marampally, with an objective of social interventions has developed into a big movement. More than 5000 students from various colleges in the state are part of the society, and now they plan to constitute chapters in all educational institutions. Started this year, this is the first charity community initiated and managed by students. It has already collected more than Rs 1 lakh and provided financial assistance to the needy.

“The objective is to encourage the youth to be part of charity activities and to make the world kinder," said Ejas Muhammed, second-year computer application student and founder of the society. "Nowadays, parents give a good amount of pocket money to children who spend it lavishly on birthdays and other celebrations. We encouraged them to provide a portion for charity.” It collects Rs 10 from each student and spends it in the same month. It gave Rs 1 lakh to a child from Thommankuthu near Thodupuzha who is a cancer patient.

The students also visited St Agnes Old Age Home at Fort Kochi and provided food for inmates. They also visited Snehakoodu at Aluva and gave dresses and food to its inmates. Their activities are spread across sectors like pain and palliative, tree planting, visiting nursing homes and orphanages, financial aid for the needy and sharing of books and commodities.
