Video: Lost child' social experiment reveals a sad reality of our times
One would expect that all children are treated equally in society irrespective of their class or creed. But a recent social experiment conducted by UNICEF shows that a child’s appearance plays an important part in how people react to her.
The video of the experiment at first shows a well-dressed 6-year-old girl named Anano standing alone on the streets of Tbilisi, Georgia. Hidden cameras capture the reactions of passers-by as they stop and ask Anano her name and if she is lost. Shockingly, moments later when the same girl is dressed as a homeless child and asked to stand in the same place, nobody even looks at her. In another scenario where she is sitting alone in a restaurant, the well-dressed Anano is fawned over by patrons while the ‘homeless child’ is heartbreakingly shunned.
The experiment highlights the fact that millions of vulnerable children are treated with cruel indifference when all they really need is help and some kind words. The video has got over 1.4 million views and has been shared by thousands of online users.
