The streets were being beautified with plants and paintings, but problems arose when one aspect took over the other.

While the GHMC officials have been going gung-ho about the initiative ‘beautification of the city’ through beautiful wall paintings, unfortunately, another initiative of theirs, ‘planting saplings’, had become a hindrance to the former.

The walls on Raj Bhavan road have been beautified with wall paintings recently. However, with the saplings in front of those walls, now growing, the art work is lost in the background.

No wonder then, that Md. Faqruddin, alumni of Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFA), who is working on the beautification project is disappointed.

“We (a team of 15 members) took a month to paint the walls on the Raj Bavan stretch. It was unfortunate to see it not getting any display,” said Faqruddin. “When we started the paintings, we asked the officials to first water the paintings so the saplings automatically gets watered, plus, the painting looks fresh and vibrant when watered.

But contrarily, the saplings were being watered first, and the mud would spill all over the art work. But contrarily, the saplings were being watered first, and the mud would spill all over the art work.

But contrarily, the saplings were being watered first, and the mud would spill all over the art work. We have used expensive eco-friendly colours. The street art culture will only beautify the city and the concept of the paintings (wild life) has been taken with plants in the foreground. Now that action has been taken, I am very happy. But I hope such loopholes in the system don’t create further problems,” he adds.

Venkatamana, PRO from GHMC, says, “The idea is to beautify the city by giving the walls and flyovers a makeover with paintings. Planting saplings too is part of the initiative. It was unfortunate that the paintings were being hidden.”
