Observers at a zoo in Vienna were surprised when they discovered a pair of giant pandas mating. Apparently, pandas in captivity have been known to mate rarely and with great difficulty because of low energetic levels.
The amorous panda couple have caused quite a stir, as they are the only pandas in Europe to mate in captivity. Yang Yang and Long Hui have already produced three babies since they first arrived at the Schonbrunn zoo in 2003, reports the Daily Mail. A video clip shows the pair mating passionately before the female loses patience and cuffs the male about the head.
Zoo authorities are now hopeful that that this mating will result in a healthy pregnancy soon. Interestingly, this zoo is the only one in Europe where pandas breed naturally. As pandas possess the digestive system of a carnivore but have been evolved to depend almost entirely on bamboo, they have little energy left for reproductive activities.
