Renowned stand-up comedian Aravind SA who became an internet sensation over-night by posting a snippet from his special Madrasi Da! was in Bengaluru performing his new material I was not ready da. We managed to catch up with him and here’s what he had to say.

After an overwhelming response from the eclectic Bengaluru audience, Aravind says, “Bengaluru is a city of diverse culture. It feels like a good representation of the country. The crowd is warm and appreciative.”

After being in the filmmaking industry for three years Aravind speaks about when he chose to take up stand up comedy as a career.

He says, “I was an assistant director for over three years, after writing several feature scripts I wanted to try stand-up comedy as a part-time thing and soon it caught on to me, I begun doing stand-up shows from 2014. My first show was in Bengaluru in 2012 at the Ranga Mandira auditorium and it was the lowest point in my career,” but from then on there was no looking back for him.

SA says that his biggest inspiration has been his mother, “She has supported me in all the decisions I make and has been a great pillar in my journey.” He also mentioned in the show that he’d never let his mother watch him perform! And managed to joke with the audiences' misconception that his show was family oriented! Although, the topics he performed were simply about the cause of our existence put forth in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

Speaking about where he gets the content for his shows from, SA says, “I wait for incidents to happen to me in my life and that inspires my content. I do not speak about others experiences.” The topics that SA refrains from speaking, “I don’t speak on explicit political topics but I keep it subtle as of now, it could change, it depends on the circumstances,” says the humane comedian!

Having performed over 150 shows including international ones SA shares about his experience, he says, “Performing worldwide was a great break for me. Touring several countries, I got to meet different people, cultures and audiences. It has been a lovely experience. I consider this as a fun way of doing your job.”

Starting off his career in filmmaking, SA believes that his biggest achievement is making a film, he says, “I want to make a film and I have no inclination towards starring any preferred actors, the script is more important to me as that is the essence of a film.”

SA says that a common misconception that people have about a comedian is that they are always happy. But reality is that they also have a roller coaster ride of emotions and we must learn to respect their space!

Giving a tip to aspiring comedians SA says, “Don’t think, try hard until you achieve the outcome you are looking for. Avoid overthinking, do not waste your time in analysing things! Just take a bold step and do it.”
