The advent of social media has ushered the present generation in a digital age but this rapid advance has also given rise to numerous risks as it exposes youth and especially women to cyber crimes.
While teenage girls being targeted by sex predators is a worrisome phenomenon, many women have been victims of revenge porn where their private pictures are leaked online. Another aspect of this is hackers accessing private images and blackmailing women, something that recently happened to US based Indian woman.
But while it might be terrifying to receive an e-mail from a stranger with one’s own nude images, Taruna Aswani refused to cower under pressure and decided to hit back at the threats by the blackmailer by going online.
She wrote that she wasn’t afraid of the pervert who had messaged her and asked for anyone with details about the address in the mail so that she could take further action through a detective she has hired.
Taruna attached screenshots of a mail which read, “All I am saying is if you want me to keep quiet on this and don’t let the world(social media, Work place, family and friends) know then you have to excite me”.
She wrote in her post that, “I do this so that other women may take a lesson to stand up to bullies and low life’s like this and may get the confidence to stand up as well in case he is known to us and is targeting all of us, but we’re either too scared, ashamed or clueless in how to manage or handle such situations.”
The post has garnered tremendous support for Taruna as it has been shared thousands of times....
