A transgender couple has carved their own definition of ‘family’ after becoming parents the natural way. The reason why their case is highly unusual is because over here it is the man who used to be a woman that gave birth to the child by woman who was a man in the past, reports BBC. Fernando Machado and his partner Diane Rodriguez, from Ecuador, are the first transgender couple to biologically have a child in South America.
The pair has not yet revealed the name of the newborn baby but lovingly refer to the 16-week-old as Caraote which means ‘the snail’. Ms. Rodriguez is no stranger to fame as she was the first transgender candidate to run for Congress in her native country in 2013. The couple gave regular updates about the pregnancy to their followers on social media and even posted pictures from the maternity ward when Machado gave delivered in June.
As neither of them had undergone gender reassignment or lower-body surgery, they were able to conceive naturally. They are hopeful about extending their family in the near future.
