With every passing day, the online dating world is bombarded with new terms defining the various trends in the dating sector. After ghosting, breadcrumbing, benching and many more, this week’s word is fishing. And what is fishing? This term holds true to the situation when you send messages out to all your matches on a dating app, only to wait and see which ones bite. Only then you decide which one to pursue.

However, the concept of fishing is not something new. Millennials today feel it is something everyone does. “It’s that what the dating apps today cater to. From a sea full of people you are matched with few and you take it on yourself to try them all until you find the right one. I guess the only new thing about ‘fishing’ is the term as the context it has been used with is really old. However, I do like the idea of calling it fishing. It gives it a new zing,” shares Niti, a vivid undergraduate who often finds herself sweeping left and right to find the right guy.

Mayank Kumar, another undergraduate student feels that trends have a short life and not everyone follows them. “We really don’t even use these terms,” he says, adding, “It is a misconception that every college going kid keeps him or herself updated with such terms. While few might be familiar with them, most of us are happy to be ignorant about such trends. Also, what these terms stand for are things that everyone has done or gone through. Haven’t we all been rejected after a date or two because the other person didn’t feel the spark or the two weren’t compatible enough. Similarly, we too have decided not to take things forward with a person for similar reasons. So, to me, it looks like ‘fishing’ has been here even before someone decided to call it ‘fishing’.
