One is never too young to start doing what they want to do in life. Those who have met Lyana, a seven-year-old girl from Aluva, would not have any doubt about it. For those who haven’t met her, Lyana Thejus Thankachan spends most of her time helping others, while other children of her age are still learning to do most things by themselves.
Lyana started helping others at the age of four. We all have seen cops regulating traffic under the scorching sun inhaling smoke from vehicles. How many of us have thought of distributing masks to them? That was what Lyana did first. Now, she distributes water bottles to traffic police and also passengers at the Aluva Railway Station every day. She also distributes food among beggars. Besides, she donated her hair to cancer patients.
“Daya Bai is my role model and I want to be a social worker like her,” says Lyana, who has won several awards already. The first award was from the traffic police. She also got an award for being the youngest charity worker. “I can’t stand it when I see someone starving on the footpath. I feel an urge to help them and I see myself in them,” she adds.
Her parents, Thankachan M. and Sinimol, are immensely proud of her and help her in all her activities. They are also involved in charity works. Sinimol is working in a palliative care unit and loves to take care of sick people. The teachers and authorities of St. Francis High School, Aluva, where Lyana studies, are also very supportive of her and give her all encouragement.
Lyana tries to find the money needed for her charity on her own. She has a quail farm and earns money through the sale of eggs.
After learning about this, Aluva Municipal Chairperson Lissy called her and said that she would buy all the eggs.
In this busy world, it is difficult to find someone spending time helping others. Lyana is one of a kind.
