Tamil Nadu teacher sells jewellery to give better facilities to students
Villupuram: Teachers play a crucial role in shaping society as they are the ones that inculcate values and take children forward on the path to explore their potential. While teachers are dedicated to their job of imparting education, some go out of their way to do much more than what’s included in their job description.
The lack of facilities in government schools of small towns and villages as well as the gap between quality of education isn’t unknown. But one class 3 teacher in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram town has taken it upon herself to ensure the best for her education, and is leaving no stone unturned.
Annapurna Mohan’s efforts have ensured an interactive board, several English books and better furniture as she wants her class to be of international standards and makes sure that all her students are fluent in English. She doesn’t let the education suffer just because such facilities are a distant dream for a panchayat run school.
Annapurna has sold her jewellery to raise finances for her initiative, and she converts her lessons in skits which her students enact. She uploaded videos on Facebook and soon teachers from all across the world started supporting her. One student started doing better after receiving a Rs 10 money order as appreciation from a teacher who saw a video of the skit.
This teacher has made a lot of difference in a short time, but doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon as she seeks to fill the gap between quality of education between government and private institutions.
