Photo of an "alien tomato" has social media users disgusted and shocked.
Reddit-user CroixBeans posted the photo of what looks like a strawberry inside a tomato. It has been dubbed the "strawmato", The Sun reported.
New post (Bizarre photo of mutant tomato-strawberry ‘alien fruit’ disgusts internet – but would you eat it?) has been published on Best of Borneo Island - https://t.co/Mbxa32OqJx pic.twitter.com/VDyWMxllna— Borneo Sights (@BorneoSights) March 21, 2018
Users of the social media site came up with all kinds of theories from mutant crossbreeding to some suggesting it could be extra-terrestrial.
When asked about the texture of the "strawmato", The Sun reported CroixBeans said: "The outer flesh of the 'strawberry' was pretty soft and a little slimy.
"Just barely touching it smudged it pretty easily.
"I've never touched an alien, but if I had to make an educated guess, I would have to say that it did feel completely alien."
People were so panicked by the image they were worried about dying after eating it. "Let us know if you die later," Walrus_Fighter wrote.
After all the mayhem and bizarre theories, one Reddit user came up with a more plausible explanation:
"It’s a stuffing tomato, they are bred to be firmer than your typical slicing tomato so they don’t disintegrate in the oven," Sporophyte wrote. Adding, "The seeds are meant to pull away from the outside like that, so they can be easily removed."
