From Brazil come award winning films

Critically acclaimed contemporary films that have won awards in international film festivals will be showcased in the Brazillian fest.

Chennai football enthusiasts might be disappointed with Brazil’s fiasco at the World Cup recently but there’s a cinematic treat awaiting the Chennaiites from the ‘country of the future’ from July 23 to July 25. It’s going to be a joint venture by Embassy of Brazil, New Delhi & Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) Chennai.

Critically acclaimed contemporary films that have won awards in international film festivals will be showcased in the Brazillian fest. Films received from different embassies or consulates are mostly from the film industry or visual communications students which make for an excellent learning opportunity for city students who take special interest in films and film making alike.

Amongst the feature films, OUT OF TUNE (Os Desafinados), a film on Rio de Janeiro, the capital city on the verge of becoming a hotbed for a new jazz form ‘made in Brazil’: Bossa Nova, shows a group of friends form the band ‘Out of Tune’ (Os Desafinados) and aspire for an international career, moved by rising musical trend and the youth’s passion for life.

THE CLOWN (O Palhaço), a film awarded by ABC for best cinematography, features the Brazilian circus industry during ’70s. A film awarded for best cinematography in the Miami Brazilian Film Festival, NOEL — THE SAMBA POET (Noel - O Poeta do Samba) directed by Ricardo Van Steen depicts lives of middle class men and their transition.

There is a lot more to explore in films like GONZAGA - FROM FATHER TO SON (Gonzaga - de Pai para Filho), a biography on Brazilian singer and player Luiz Gonzaga and comedy flick ROMEO AND JULIET GET MARRIED (O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta) revealing the couple’s forbidden love journey with an impossible happy end.

The films to be screened will be mostly non-commercial. This gives parallel cinema an opportunity to gather audiences at par with popular commercial movies.

Films from Venezuela and Argentina, Japan and Iceland are also in line to be featured in the upcoming film festivals in September followed by Taiwan and Israel films in October. Further, with the support of the Tamil Nadu government, the 16th edition of the Chennai International Film Festival, is scheduled to be held from December 13 to 20.
