Bringing smiles
It’s that time of the year again when parents make a beeline to department stores to get their wards new uniforms, shiny shoes, bags and schoolbooks. Yes, it is a mad rush to ensure that kids are all ready for their first day at school.
Meanwhile, take a moment to think of those kids who do not have access to new clothes, books or bags simply because they do not have the means to afford it. E-Unnathi, a woman and child empowerment organisation, is taking steps to ensure that little dreams do not get trampled under the feet of financial burdens.
The organisation is making an appeal to all kind-hearted people to gift a school kit to kids from financially backward sections. A representative of the organisation says, “We are in talks with the collectors in Wayanad and Kuttanad to identify 200 school students each who can benefit from this initiative. We will also identify 200 students from Ernakulam and if we get an overwhelming response, we would like to extend this scheme to schools in Pathanamthitta, too.”
The back-to-school kit will be handed over to students in Wayanad on May 28 and to those in Kuttanad on the reopening day. A kit would contain a bag, notebooks, geometry boxes, stationery and an umbrella and the cost of each such kit would be Rs 999.
