Watch: How objectification of women in media is harming young girls

The video also reveals how popular brands are glamorising aggression towards women in their ad campaigns.

The increasing sexual objectification of women in the mass media has had far-reaching effects on our society. A project titled WomenNotObjects aims to shed light on the horrors that young girls have to endure as a result of the incessant exploitation of the female form by advertising.

The video points out the way unrealistic beauty standards like the ‘thigh gap’ and the ‘Kylie Jenner lip challenge’ have pushed impressionable women and girls over the edge in the quest to achieve celebrity-like perfection. It also reveals how popular brands are glamorising aggression towards women in their ad campaigns, which then trivializes both physical and sexual violence against women in real life.

The only way to put an end to this type of hyper-sexualisation of women is to acknowledge that it is affecting our mothers, daughters, friends and ultimately everyone.
