Animals or animal-driven vehicles okay on most roads of Hyderabad

GHMC has not issued any notification on prohibition of animals on major roads in the twin cities.

Hyderabad: People can ride animals or animal-driven vehicles on most roads in the city. Riding animals is not allowed on Necklace Road, PVNR Expressway and Outer Ring Road as per rules.

Police said that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is the authority, which issues notifications on roads where animals are prohibited. But, the GHMC has not issued any such notification on major roads in the twin cities and on state highways passing through the twin cities.

Meanwhile, traffic police says that if a horse rider creates trouble for other road users or a traffic jam on city roads, the rider can be booked under the City Police Act. “If animal riding has to be banned on a particular road, the GHMC issues the notification. Traffic police enforce the law by stopping riders,” said traffic police additional commissioner Jitender.

In Hyderabad, people riding horses on roads at high speed are rare. But, horses are widely used for marriage processions in many parts of the city.

Hyderabad police has a mounted horse wing with dozens of horses. This is used for crowd control and law and order purposes. Talking about the accident at Mailardevpally, in which a person was killed after being kicked by a horse, senior traffic police officials said that it was a rarest of the rare incident.
