Knotinghill's wacky invitation game
When your wedding is on the cards, getting hold of the right wedding card could be the first and biggest challenge for you. But wedding cards have come a long way from the traditional red and gold coloured printed cards. Taking a cue from celebrity weddings like Anushka-Virat and Radhika Pandit-Yash, more and more people are now looking at creative and innovative wedding invites.
After months of planning and pulling off their secret destination wedding away from the media, Virat and Anushka had put in a lot of thought in crafting the invitation for their reception. The wedding invite of Radhika Pandit and Yash contained a jasmine sapling and a booklet. From illustrated art works to custom-made music boxes, there are many varieties of wedding cards trending. When Aishwarya Rao and Pothamsetti Praveen Kumar got married last year, they wanted a ‘Go Green’ wedding invite and they also distributed money plants with it. “We wanted our wedding to be very unique. To start off, we opted for money plants as wedding invites. The idea was from my mother who said that even if people throw away the cards, the saplings will always be a part of their homes — as a reminder of our wedding,’’ said Aishwarya who works as a consultant.
For Vimal Chandran, who started making personalised wedding illustrations, the idea kicked off as a happy accident five years ago. “Seeing my paintings in social media, someone asked me to make an illustrated wedding card and later I uploaded it on Facebook. Ever since, I have had numerous people approaching me for similar wedding cards. What makes illustrated cards special is the personalised element — they talk to me about their first date, their dreams, interest and so on. Based on this, I illustrated an image closely connected to their life,’’ said Vimal Chandran, an artist.
The wedding invitation of former minister Gali Janardhan Reddy’s daughter Bramhani came with an innovative turquoise box and Sandalwood saplings were given as gifts, and it became a memory that’s hard for any of the participants to forget. “It was not just any regular chocolate or sweet box, it contained an LED screen and a video. The video showcased the family members lip-syncing to a Kannada song that was specially composed for the wedding,’’ says Ashwani U Jain, a city-based entrepreneur who attended the wedding. City-based entrepreneur Anmol Bajaj says that wedding invites with a box of roses is the latest trend. “I usually deliver fresh roses in a box for various functions. Recently, there are many people who opt for a box of red roses for their wedding invites,’’ says Anmol.
