Spotlight on a legend's life

Directed by N.E. Harikumar, the documentary throws light on Khader's life in Koyilandy.

Writer U. A. Khader's life has been influenced by two cultures. Born to Malayali father and Burmese mother, his early days of childhood were spent in Burma. He reached Kerala at the age of seven and lived in Koyilandy, his father Ussangaantakathu Moithootti Haji's native place. Uranjadunna Deshangal, a documentary on writer U.A. Khader that will be screened at the Children’s Park Theatre in Ernakulam on May 20, intends to paint a detailed picture of his life as a writer.

Directed by N.E. Harikumar, the documentary throws light on Khader’s life in Koyilandy, the socio-political environment during his time and his entry into literature; according to one account, it was C.H. Mohammed Koya who kindled the spark in him by giving him Balyakalasakhi to read. We get to see him recalling people and situations that helped in shaping his stories. Others like Dr M.G.S. Narayanan, N.S. Madhavan, E.V. Ramakrishnan, M.N. Karassery, K.E.N., Dr M.R. Raghavawarrior, Khadeeja Mumtaz, Dr P.K. Thilak and Raju Narippatta share their views.

Khader has written about 50 works in Malayalam in various genres that include novels, novellas, short stories, travelogues and non-fiction, during his tenure. His works have been translated into languages such as Hindi, English and Kannada.

The documentary screening will begin at 6 pm.
