It’s very difficult to take time out from an assignment in Law and Order, which keeps him on his toes round the clock. But whenever he can manage, Anjani Kumar loves to take an hour out early in the morning — at 5.30 am, when the city sleeps, to enjoy his passion.
“I often get reminded of a quote from Winston Churchill, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man,” says the IPS officer, adding, “I have been doing horseback riding since my training days at Lal Bahadur Shastry Academy of Administration at Mussoorie in 1990.”
He won the Maharaja of Tonk Cup for being the Best Horse Rider of his batch at the Sardar Patel National Police Academy during the 90s, which fuelled his passion. “I went on to win a medal at the National Police Equestrian Meet,” he says with pride.
Reminiscing about an incident that took place during his training, he says, “Horse riding training has many funny stories in every batch. I remember a colleague requesting the horse to take care of him before a class and thanking him at the end of it!” Anjani Kumar believes that a life without passion is a life not fully lived.
“Everyone must have a passion. My passion has some element of risk in it as I have had my quota of injuries as well. The behaviour of each horse at the Police Mounted unit is different. But they are great fun to be with,” he says.
