Crimes against women in India have been increasingly reported as sexual harassment, rapes and eve teasing have been raising concerns for the society. While the approach of the society is being repeatedly questioned in such cases, there is also a need to immediately scale up security of women.
Taxi drivers are people we rarely thank or have conversations with and in a recent case a woman was also insulted by a taxi driver in Mumbai. But another account from the city shows how many are also people who stand up to help others when it matters.
In a Facebook post by Humans of Bombay, an old taxi driver recounts an experience from some years back, when he saw a terrified woman in a dingy lane at night, with a gang of drunk men following her and passing comments.
As the gang started to run after her, the taxi driver honked loudly and managed to raise alarm, hence causing the men to flee in another direction. He recounts how he dropped the woman home who later thanked him.
Such stories provide a glimmer of hope in times when crimes against women show a very sorry state of affairs when it comes to women’s security....
