Singing cringe pop for fun'

The youth of the city gathered at Sanjeevaiah park to sing the viral Cringe pop number, Aunty ki Ghanti.

In a new social media fad, hundreds of youth are coming together to sing these words, Bol na aunty aau kya, ghanti mai bajau kya. The lyrics are from a cringe pop song, Aunty ki ghanti, written and rapped by self-claimed rap star, Omprakash Mishra.

The song was originally posted on the internet in December 2015 but was only recently discovered in the meme circles. It has become so famous that the youth have started humming it. After youngsters in Delhi took the lead, others followed suit with Hyderabad in tow.

On Saturday, many youngsters in the city got together at Sanjeevaiah Park to sing the track at an event organised by Raahil, one of the “admins” of the Facebook page Deccan’istan.

Explaining what made him create the event, Raahil says, “Many people are getting together to sing the song, either in public or in private. This event was organised on public demand wherein members of the group had been messaging me to organise a get-together. And since the song is becoming a rage on various social media platforms, it was apt.”

Raahil’s event, however, had its share of troubles. To begin with, the do was earlier supposed to happen near the Love Hyderabad installation, but seeing the number of people who showed interest, the venue was changed to People’s Plaza.

Meanwhile, cops took notice and also informed the organiser that events at a large scale cannot be organised without permission. When Raahil approached the authorities concerned, he was asked to have a private get-together.

“The event lasted for hardly 10 minutes, but many kept coming even after it had ended. We made sure that nobody was disturbed. People were present just to have fun. They now want me to conduct a similar event when Omprakash releases his next video,” mentions Raahil.

Aditya Karda, who was present at the event, said that he went there just for fun and to support Omprakash. “This event was organised on public demand and I wanted to support Omprakash Mishra. His video was taken down on Saturday, so I took this as an opportunity to support a fellow YouTuber. He has put in so much of effort into the song, and though it was released long back and became viral only recently, it has garnered 3 million views. If this song would have been sung by rappers who are popular in Bollywood, nobody would have raised an eyebrow. But even after YouTube took it down, there were multiple people who uploaded it, triggering a strong support,” says Aditya, who runs a YouTube channel, DeetsWorld.

Another attendee, on condition of anonymity said, “The song has become sort of addictive, with a lot of people — many who don’t even know the meaning of the lyrics — humming it.”

Though this is just another social media fad that will, hopefully, die down soon, both the lyrics and the creator of the rap song have been receiving some serious flak with hundreds calling the song misogynistic.
