Ever thought a doctor who is diagnosing your ailments will be cracking jokes on stage? Yes, you read it right. An ENT surgeon by profession and a comic by passion, Dr Jagdish Chaturvedi from Bengaluru, is in the city for a performance.
An accomplished doctor, theatre artiste and author, Dr Jagdish was among MIT Technology Review ‘35 Innovators Under 35’, has been pursuing theatre since he was five, and it’s his passion which lead him to the world of stand-up comedy. Talking about his role reversal, he says, “I always wanted to become a doctor, following my father’s footsteps. But in school, I used to take part in plays, mainly the comic ones. I guess since then I had this comic streak in me.”
Dr Jagdish started dabbling in comedy four years back while he was in Stanford University for his research studies. “Over there it is very normal to do stand-up comedy but in India, it gained popularity in the last two-three years,” he says. Further elaborating, he says, “I hope to showcase a different perspective of looking at mistakes and failures. Mistakes are a part of everyone’s growth and is a necessary element to harness rather than avoid.” His channel on YouTube, The Magaa of small things, is very successful and few of his clips have been bought by Balaji Telefilms to showcase on their digital platform Altbalaji. “Few months back, I received a call from them about the videos. They liked them and bought the exclusive rights of five videos to air it on the platform,” he shares.
It’s not only comedy that has made him a name to reckon with, he is the brain behind several inventions of devices that will be beneficial to the general public. Currently, he is working on how to make a low-cost , high-quality device to make Balloon Sinuplasty reachable to many.
