Be our pondati: IIT Madras students satirical take on arranged marriages in India
When we talk about marriages in India, the selection process is itself a very complex procedure. There are various factors taken into consideration when it comes to choosing partners. Unless western countries, marriages in India is not just about two people, but it's about two families.
Most of the girls in India go through the trials and tribulations of arranged marriages and they face some of the most blatant and critical remarks from the groom’s family about their looks, education, nature and so on.
Three final year IIT Madras students, Asmita Ghosh, Anukripa Elango and Krupa Varghese made a video which is a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s song, Call Me Maybe.
“Be Our Pondati”, is a satirical take of these girls on arranged marriages in India.
The video was uploaded on YouTube and has gone viral with over 4, 23,000 views.
The video features Varghese as a typical Indian mother in search of a ‘tall thin fair girl’for her son. She wants a daughter-in-law who is ready to except her stereotypical demands like preparing food, working only part time and producing babies soon.
The girls created this video try to highlight the things that an arranged marriage comes along with. One can take a look at the classified ads in the paper, it represents the stereotype of the Indian society.
