Meals on wheels

Food trucks have become prominent eateries for Chennaities. DC speaks to a few from the business to see how the city has welcomed the concept.

Food trucks have been quickly gaining popularity. The pricing is also pocket-friendly due to lesser overheads and this is one reason it attracts customers. The advantage of mobility gives an advantage to customers to buy food from various locations.

“Food trucks are popular for fast food but our food truck is unique as we give freshly cooked, soft and tender meat which is as good as any fancy restaurant yet at an affordable price”, says Abbas Bharmal, managing partner of Char, a food on wheel concept located in R A Puram.

“People have welcomed not just the concept of eating out of a truck but also the food for its rare flavour and juiciness. We are quite overwhelmed with all the support we have got so far from our regular clientele”, he says.

“Food trucks give the advantage to experiment with different locations versus a restaurant which pins you to one particular area”, adds Abbas. Food trucks are a great idea for start-ups or small scale businesses as they are a considerably cheaper alternative to opening a full-fledged restaurant.

Nikhil Moturi, owner of Crimson Chakra also operates two food trucks under the brand Chakra — one is a dosa food truck and another is a Chinese food truck on OMR and ECR. He says, “I was always fascinated by the food truck culture and the fact that it was mobile. The main spec behind the food truck was the ignorance of most people who do not know how to operate a food truck”.

The success of his food truck was because he was passionate about it and it also focuses on the right ingredients and consistent food quality which is given at competitive prices and this attracts the customers. “Simplicity, consistency and accessibility are three things which make Chakra truck unique from other food trucks. Our signature dishes are old school Chinese food and different varieties of dosa from Madurai”.

The food trucks mainly focus on the migrant community. Tickle truck is the first ice-cream truck in Chennai which has come up with a unique Indian flavour.

Every ice-cream made by them has an Indian spice to give an Indian touch.

“We sell popsicles, ice-cream, ice-cream sodas and ice-cream sundaes. These ice-creams can also be called as Indian culinary ice-creams. Ice-creams like pal kova and carrot halwa are some of our signature ice-creams.

Popsicles such as mystery more, we add spicy masala to get the flavour”, says Barath Jayanth, founder of Tickle Truck.
