That one question

A new short film emphasises the importance of premarital testing in a thought-provoking way.

A Premarital Question, a short film that talks about getting medical tests done before marriage, has been gaining the attention of viewers. The short film was uploaded on YouTube by Ashima Theatre Group a week ago and has already received over 60,000 views, apart from trending on other social media platforms.

Delhi-based actress and writer of A Premarital Question, Silky Agarwal, who did her BA in mass communication from Hyderabad, feels this is the first time someone has made a film on the subject. “My husband and I were looking for a fresh idea to make a short film on. We got tested before getting married.

Although very important, this is not a common practice. So we thought why not make a movie about it. Getting medical tests done is as important as matching kundlis before marriage,” says Silky, who has been a part of many plays, theater performances and short films. “I have been interested in acting since my college. The story-telling part of a play or a film really excites me,” she confesses.

Getting medical tests done by both the partners is an issue not really spoken of and even less considered. A Premarital Question brings out the issue in a simple but thought-provoking way. The film deals with why health and fitness is as important in a marriage as it is to apply for jobs.

Talking about why young couples should consider medical tests before marriage, she says, “There are a lot of misconceptions around this subject. People think asking for a medical test is questioning the sanctity of marriage. But that wouldn’t eradicate possibilities of medical issues after the marriage. So, it is better to get medical tests done before entering a physical relationship.”

Ask Silky about her inspiration and she says, “My husband has inspired and motivated me to be an actress. He has been my mentor and guide.”
