Comedian's relatable post about his Indian parents goes viral

It's time to stand up to our parents if they subscribe to bigotry.

Although many young Indians are exposed to different cultures and progressive ideas nowadays thanks to our inter-connected world, not everybody’s parents may necessarily be willing to change with the times. Mumbai-based writer and comedian Dhruv Deshpande recently wrote a post on Facebook about how it is necessary to stand up to our parents and compel them to let go off bigotry.

Apart from the many good things about our culture, there are also certain evils that have become a part of the fabric of Indian society. Deshpande shares about how he chose to tackle the issue of homophobia in his own family straight on by having an honest conversation with his mother. He stresses that it is important for us to question our parents’ prejudices and make efforts to make them more open-minded.

He then ends his post by writing the following words: “Look behind your computer screens at the wrinkled little lovable bigot you’re living with. If you love them, tell them they’re wrong. They’re wrong a lot. Let’s make the world a better place, one parent at a time.” His touching post received thousands of likes and was widely shared on social media as well.
