Two horrible incidents of gang rape and murder of innocent girls in Kathua in Jammu region and Unnao in UP have outraged the nation. The beastly episodes have been like lightning rods triggering reactions among the people, politicians and the Prime Minister finally breaking his silence on the subject. They have triggered religious tensions as well as widespread protests. The outrage is best measured by the angry responses on social media, from top netas to commoners having their say.
The sheer inhumanity of the bestial acts has shaken the nation, much as the Nirbhaya incident did in 2012.
The politicisation of the rape-murder this time has made matters considerably worse. The kin of netas and government officials are suspected to be among the perpetrators of such a heinous act, one of which was done in the premises of a temple. If these two incidents do not stir the conscience of the land, nothing will. Will the authorities ensure all the perps are punished?
