Video: 11-year-old girl's situation highlights deep-seated gender roles in India
Gender roles in India are dictated by societal norms which time and again reinforce tasks cut out for each person according to their gender. Those who suffer most due to such a construct are women, since these gender roles come with several restrictions for them.
Although there are several efforts from different sections of Indian society to bring change, gender equality largely depends on breaking these norms and defying assigned gender roles.
But it seems that goal is a long way ahead as a video featuring an 11-year-old girl makes it clear that gender roles are so deep rooted in society that even a child that age doesn’t hope to do more than household work.
Khushboo already plays the role of a mother to her 8-year-old brother Shani, and the young boy will probably grow up seeing women’s role in society as being limited to the kitchen.
