Amanda McLaughlin from the US constantly craves sex. The 23-year-old has been suffering from persistent genital arousal disorder or PGAD for the last ten years and admits that she has to constantly beg her fiancé JoJo for sex everyday to relieve her symptoms.
The disorder leaves her in pain constantly and she is unable to work and rarely leaves her home.
Amanda, who recently spoke of her ordeal as part of a documentary for BBC called Living Differently says that it is not fun to be aroused all the time. McLaughlin’s symptoms began when she was just 13, but she was not diagnosed with PGAD until six years later.
Her mother Victoria admitted that she and her family did not understand her daughter’s condition at first and felt that she was a hypochondriac.
Victoria is now supportive of her daughter as is her boyfriend JoJo.
Amanda realises that maintaining a relationship with her condition was difficult but says that JoJo had never judged her and it was love at first sight for them.
Amanda admits that the condition affects the couple’s sex life tremendously and sometimes she just has to beg her boyfriend for sex so that some of the pressure would be relieved for her.
Amanda currently takes 30 different types of medications to ease the pain caused by her condition. She also uses ice 'inserts' to ease her pelvic swelling.
Assistant professor of neurology at Michigan University Dr Priyanka Gunta who is treating Amanda says while there are no cure for such a rare diagnosis, they are trying a few different therapies.
