Mother diaries
It is always asked by some why a day should be dedicated to celebrate the glory of people who are crucial to our life. However, the fact is that we observe days like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and even Grandparent’s Day, which is meant to remember and glorify the sacrifices and services these people do unfailingly.
On this Mother’s Day, we try to turn the spotlight on a couple of women who have done incredible work. In a telephonic interview, National Film Award Winner Surabhi Lekshmi, who bagged the award for her portrayal of a single mother in the Malayalam film Minnaminungu, shared her views on the feelings every woman develops as soon as she becomes a mother. When asked about the challenge of portraying such a character even though she was not a mother, Surabhi says, “Every woman has a mother in her and this could be the reason why I could relate to the emotions of the character and render what was required.”
Surabhi is of the opinion that women, especially mothers, are well equipped to stand by their dear ones in all situations and that they unknowingly develop the strength and wisdom to take decisions that will work in their children’s and family’s favour. “I believe that every woman, irrespective of the fact that she is a mother or not, is a powerhouse in herself and when she becomes a mother, she automatically knows how to channel her power in the right way. This is where women are different from men. Despite being independent and having a successful career, they very seamlessly also manage their household duties as well, which I don’t say that a man cannot but it will take him a lot of struggle to get into that slot. Problems do not arise when either of the parents takes care of the family and kids. Problems arise when partners, instead of complementing each other, start blaming each other,” she adds.
Surabhi, who says that she has immense respect for men, doesn’t forget to mention that if people start accepting women as they accept men, then a particular day is not required to honour a role a human being takes up during a lifetime.
We also got in touch with Saraswathy Gopinath, a 70-year-old entrepreneur and incredible mom who did not get disheartened when there was the usual talk that her baby didn’t have a fair complexion. But in fact it was this that made her develop a skin care oil from the extracts of 32 different flowers and plants and trees.
Saraswathy Gopinath, after retiring from Cochin Port, expanded this oil making into an enterprise and is now busy entrepreneur, getting orders even from the US. “I am a mother and when it came to doing something for my child, I did everything possible and now my skill has gained me acceptance in the society even at this age. I started doing something unconventional after becoming a mother,” says Saraswathi who now has another preparation that helps those with varicose vein problems.
