The relevance of manifestos may have diminished over several elections in free India. The major national parties did, however, make an effort to present detailed manifestos this time. While some of the promises made could add up to 10 per cent of GDP if the giveaway schemes are implemented, others have been somewhat more realistic.
Given the fact that the bitterest election is being fought now, there was cynicism or disbelief expressed in mutually degrading fashion. For instance, the Congress advertisement featuring Rahul Gandhi and an elderly Tamil woman was obviously photoshopped and badly too while leaving one extraneous finger on the lady and the bakhts had a whale of a time decrying that. Not to be outdone in the battle of imagery in the high-stakes poll, Congress loyalists picked on typos — a vital one promising violence on women - in the BJP manifesto to gather brownie points in the unprecedented tit for tat battle. It was also pointed out how the BJP manifesto of 2014 had several leaders on the cover while the 2019 one was all about one man — PM Modi.
The common voter knows he will be sought after only for his vote and he can see little light in the manifestos. Only at a subconscious level will they wistfully consider what the winners may provide for them as some have even promised the moon in exchange for the vote. Some things never change.

BJP manifesto is also a hurried panicked reaction to Congress manifesto. Poor drafting and typos in women section shows they made it in a hurry, and don't even have an intelligent person to proof read a manifesto forget any real wisdom into preparing for it.Siddharth@svaradarajan
