Niravu on mission to clean up Nadapuram
KOZHIKODE: Niravu Vengeri has come to the rescue of Nadapuram where garbage had piled up since the waste collection stalled three months back following a row over the panchayat owned treatment plant. The grama panchayat has reached an agreement with the NGO to collect waste for a year. “The scientific disposal of waste would be done in three phases. The panchayat board meeting has approved the plan on September 9,” said panchayat president Safeera Moonaamkuni.
They completed the removal of the piled up waste from the site on a war-footing by Monday. Niravu took the bio and non-degradable waste to their centre. In the second phase, they will collect all the waste from Nadapuram and Kallachi towns after separating from its source. In the final phase, the panchayat plant would be made functional to treat the waste there itself with the assistance of Niravu.
The panchayat has earmarked Rs 10 lakh for the purpose. Nadapuram and Kallachi generate 10 tonnes of waste every day on an average. Nadapuram was adjudged as the best grama panchayat in the country last year by the Union ministry of panchayati raj mainly due to the efficient system of garbage disposal. The plant went defunct a few months back after local protests alleging pollution.
