Christmas festivities are a colourful and joyous affair on college campuses. This Christmas is even more special as it’s the first festival season after Keralites survived the worst natural calamity in its history, showing resilience in the face of adversity. Planning and arrangements for Christmas celebrations have started in many colleges in the state.
Meanwhile, SCMS College, Kalamassery, is all set to kick start the celebrations. For the college, Christmas is the first celebration of the academic year since it was severely affected by the floods. Majority of the college properties were destroyed and not been competely restored yet.
“Christmas will be celebrated this year in a minimal way when compared to last year,” says Praveen Kammath, coordinator of the celebration. The programmes will include two competitions and many more activities. There will be a batch-wise carol competition followed by a cake icing competition. A skit with a Christmas theme will also be staged. The dress code for the day is set as red and white to complement the Christmas theme. The Christmas celebration will conclude with a mega carol in which more than 100 students will be participating,” adds Praveen.
The women’s cell of the college will be setting up a stall for the sale of various Christmas items. “The stall will offer various products such as greeting cards, handmade diaries, craft items and food items,” explains the coordinator.
Govt. Medical College, Ernakulum, is celebrating this Christmas in a different way. They are planning to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ along with the inmates of Christhu Vikas Old Age Home by cutting cakes and having lunch with them.
In S.H. College, Thevara, the celebration will be a low key affair, comprising a Christmas carol competition and a message from the principal. “The celebration is scheduled for December 21 and will start post lunch. The celebrations will end with a DJ entertaining the students with some good music,” say the organisers. They are also planning to conduct a cake fest on December 19.
The way of celebrating Christmas is different in each college, but the ultimate aim is spreading joy and unity.
