Melodious Onam

Cops of Kochi city central police station have come up with an Onam music video.

Onam songs are a staple of Onam in the good old days. Many of us cherish melodies such as Uthradapoonilave vaa, Ponnonam ponnonam, Para niraye, Atham pathinu etc... With takers for Onam cassettes going down every year, only a few albums reach the market now. Nevertheless, a handful of musicians come out with their collection of songs every year. Now, the Kerala police, the people's servants and protectors, have reached the hearts of Malayalis through a Onam music video, Ormappookkalam.

The six-minute-long music video is an initiative by cops of Kochi city central police station. SCPO Manojkumar Kakoor's lyrics are composed by Sarath Mohan and sung by Central CI S. Vijayashankar. The music video is directed by central station CPO and Oru Yemandan Premakatha-fame Saleesh Karikkal. SCPO Manojkumar Kakoor penned two songs – Defenders and Kerala Olympic Day theme songs – for the state police last year. S. Vijayashankar was part of video songs done by the state department. Talking about the Onam song, the team says they tried to create the feel of the harvest festival in the composition by adding all the festival elements – from the pookkalam (flower carpet), Onasadya and Onakkodi to oonjal (swing). “Our aim is to bring pleasant memories of Onam to the viewers and listeners,” says Saleesh.

Released under the banner of ‘She Medias’, the video’s cinematographer is Vinod Adithya, editor is Abhishek K. Kannan, orchestration is by Dhanush M.H., associate director is Jidhu Sudan and assistant cameraman, Joseph Sebastian. Heli-cam is by Manoj Vadakken and make-up, by Raji Kiran.

Actor Bibin George and Ernakulam ACP K. Lalji released the song.
